Trust is everything for a local newsroom. These are the principles we work to, and you should hold us to them.

Accuracy

We check facts before we publish. We use primary sources — documents, records, data and people with direct knowledge — wherever we can. When we can't verify something, we say so, or we don't publish it.

Fairness

When we report criticism of a person or organisation, we give them a fair opportunity to respond before publication, and we include their response. We describe people and communities with care and avoid language that stereotypes or sensationalises.

Corrections

When we get something wrong, we correct it as quickly as possible. Corrections are noted at the bottom of the article, with the date and a description of what changed. Significant corrections are also mentioned in The 7am Briefing. To report an error, email corrections@wire.example.com.

Independence

Our journalism is never influenced by advertisers, members or funders. Advertising and sponsored content are always clearly labelled and kept separate from our reporting. Our reporters don't accept gifts or free trips from people they cover.

Sources

We name our sources wherever possible. We grant anonymity only when a source would face genuine risk or harm if identified, and when the information is important and cannot be obtained another way. The editor knows the identity of every anonymous source we use.

Opinion

Opinion pieces are clearly labelled. They represent the views of their writers, not of The Wire. Columnists are held to the same standards of factual accuracy as our reporters.

Investigations

Our investigations explain how they were carried out, so readers can judge the evidence for themselves. Every organisation we investigate is given a detailed account of our findings and a reasonable time to respond.

Complaints

If you believe we've fallen short of these standards, write to the editor at editor@wire.example.com. We will reply to every complaint.
